Talk about being clear and present. This is clearly the most dangerous situation presently before us.
Here is a link to a hair-raising article I had to read three times to assure myself I was really reading what I thought I was reading.
Jim Hansen, Bush's top climate modeller at NASA and considered by some to be one of the most creative and productive scientists in the world ,says the following:
Unless we get a grip on carbon dioxide emissions within the next ten years the temperature of this planet Earth will rise one degree WHICH IS WARMER THAN IT'S BEEN IN 500,000 YEARS. Go back and count the zeroes. That's a half a million years.
We've all read in recent days about the Greenland icecap melting at a rate twice as fast as five years ago. Hansen further states that we have no working model which can reliably predict what will happen because of that.
He says that we are close to a dangerous tipping point at which irreversible and unstoppable damage may occur to the planet. The rate at which the polar ice sheets are melting may rise to an exponentially explosive rate.
If the Earth heats up by three degrees the oceans may rise by 25 feet. This means, of course, that we could lose all coastal land which is less than 25 feet above sea level.
As if that wasn't scary enough, Hansen claims, and some of his colleagues back him up on this (albeit anonymously), that he is being muzzled by the current administration which is attempting to curtail his access to the media.
I urge you to follow this link and read the entire article for yourself. Make sure you follow Hansen's own embedded link which details the attempts to keep him on a short leash.
He's a man of character and deserves our support and full attention.
