I'm a big fan of Winston Churchill. I'm probably dating myself if I say that I remember the day of his funeral in England. Every little village shop was closed and shuttered. The country ground to a halt. Although he lost favor after World War II (after all he was an extreme Conservative and almost certainly racist although an argument could be made that he was a product of his times) he was never forgotten by the Brits. To this day, I consider that he was the main reason I didn't grow up speaking German. Yanks into the War notwithstanding - England wouldn't have been able to last the two years until the U.S.'s entry into European conflicts without Winnie's powerful inspiration.
His oustanding oratorical abilities and his absolute faith in British resolve put backbone into a country that desperately needed it. Read, or better listen to, his most famous speeches and see what great leadership really is.
I was thinking of old Winnie when I heard about the London terrorist attacks. My sister lives in Birmingham which had 20,000 people evacuated days after the attacks because of a bomb scare. I wish someone could channel his spirit and his passion and his unwavering belief in good and bad. Certainly Tony B. is not going to cut the mustard.
